Every time i've come out of surgery lately, the first thing the nurses try to give me is soda. They regale me with their wide selection, and never even mention the orange juice and healthier alternatives they have. Soda is literally one of the worst things you can put in your body, especially because of the processed sugar. Processed sugar is one of the most contributing and often overlooked factors to so many health problems, especially in western society.

A pretty good summary of why soda sucks: http://healthbolt.net/2006/12/08/what-happens-to-your-body-if-you-drink-a-coke-right-now/

Some woes of sugar: http://www.healingdaily.com/detoxification-diet/sugar.htm

Obesity is another thing looked to soda and sugar in particular, and it's no wonder childhood obesity is an "epidemic" when schools sign lucrative contracts with beverage companies for vending machines in their halls, amongs other things.

Very interesting Zaii. I remember my sensei telling the dojo that the best thing to drink between sessions was water, not soda. How many teaspoons of sugar make up 100% of the daily recommended intake?

People do not want to take responsibility for their own health. Period fullstop. I see far more health conscious individuals in the dog world, who have learned how to eat reasonably well though studying canine nutrition and seeing the difference it makes to their dogs. but now I address those same people regarding the perils of pressure treated wood, of herbicide use, Teflon, plastic cling wrap, blackened foods and other known carcinogens, and they dont want to listen. It seems this species needs to be in desparation before we are willing to change.
Whether you care about dogs or not, they are the canary in the coalmine when it comes to environmental cancers, and the stats on cancer in canines is staggering - a true epidemic.

There are even people still blaming weather changes entirely in El Ninjo.

I'm never sure whether to be annoyed or just...sad.

In the very first line of the article.....it says, "10 teaspoons of sugar hit your system. (100% of your recommended daily intake.)"

Fera, while I certainly don't have your particular brand of frustration, I can relate, as my mother has two tumors, high blood pressure, osteoperosis, cholesterol woes, irritable bowel syndrome, and undiagnosed chronic nosebleeds, yet she refuses to listen to me in the least when I try to explain that lifestyle and diet changes would help her immensely. She essentially wants a magic pill that will make the symptoms disappear without having to come face to face with the roots of her problems, which is an attitude I see in a lot of people.

Very interesting information Zaii, thanks for posting this. I'm quite big on soda personally, it and natural carbonated water being the two things I drink widely other than plain water. I wasn't aware that most sodas contain processed sugar...so I just checked my fridge and it seems I have two kinds of soda (one greek company called "Ivi" and another british one called "Britvic") that do not include it...just including water, sodium carbonite and soda. Am I drinking the minority here?

Kain,

Your soda is carbonated soda water:

The evil sodas are often called soft drinks,
but have many other names {think Coke, Pepsi}:

Most commercial sodas such as Coca Cola, Pepsi, and the myriad of smaller sodas owned by them follow the same or a similar formula as the article mentioned, so I'd say your drinks of choice are likely in the minority. Probably has a bit to do with your location.

We call coke, pepsi and such softdrinks here in Oz.. and we also have soda water, which is carbonated water - I guess it's the commonwealth connection :D

Aside from plain water, soda water is pretty much my standard liquid refreshment.

I'm a bit of a health nut myself, and have coached several freinds through weightloss/diet change. The first thing I get them to do, to really produce the effects necessary to get someone to buy into a lifestyle change is have them quit soda.

With a week or two they will have noticed dramatic changes: a few pounds dropped, more energy, reduced fatigue...
