View Full Version : Pendulums

I'm very fond of pendulums. I like the way they look, the way they feel, and the way they operate. I like the idea of dowsing for information and getting "yes" or "no" answers rather than going through an entire tarot spread. Sometimes all I want is a simple yes or no.

The problem is that I doubt how reliable pendulums actually are.

I have a beautiful pendulum that just sits around looking pretty because I don't trust that the answers I get through it won't be influenced by my own desires, emotional states, wishful thinking, negative thinking, etc. I can't be sure it won't just give me the answer I want it to.

Does anyone use pendulums on a regular basis, and are there any techniques for guarding against the pendulum essentially just telling you what you want to hear?

How reliable or accurate do you think pendulums are as divination tools?

I tried pendulum with mixed results, but my friend swears by it.

Apparently you can influence the result if you are focussed more on what you want from it rather than just staying still and unattached to the outcome.

Is there any kind that works best Lucian? I made mine but I have seen some nice ones in the occult store.

.
IMO detachment is key for divination tools in general and that maybe influencing of ones tools is just a shade more obvious when it happens in pendulum working (?)

Great topic...

I've been thinking (and feeling) about this alot recently...

One of my clients at the studio uses a pendulum frequently as
we design sonic structures (generally, sinewave permutations)...

She usually uses a pendulum with an alphanumeric chart,
but she also uses a method that utilizes only her fingers...

And although we have discussed her approach to dowsing in general,
I really need to question her more deeply on what she's actually doing...

So I will, and I'll report back...

and I also feel a strong urge to design and fabricate pendulums...

I agree that any time someone uses divination they have to try to be detached from the outcome. I have experimented with this, focusing on something like... oh... the feeling of my pulse on the little crystal or the wall beyond the pendulum while asking my question. That does make me feel a little more confident in the answers I get.

However I've also done experiments with asking the same question during two different "readings", from a position of detachment, and discovered that I get a different answer than before when there is no reason for it to have changed.

I get the feeling that, even when I have detached myself, it's still picking up on my belief systems, my assumptions, etc. and not being entirely "objective". I've been told that pendulums can be influenced by other things in your surroundings, like crystals, rocks, electronics... for some reason it matters whether or not your legs are crossed...:o_O:

I've used a ring on a string before. Now that I think of it, I have heard that the pretty ones made out of crystal or any kind of stone like that are more sensitive and at risk for being inaccurate. Some people think that the ones made of wood are best. My favourite was one made of metal. Just a plain metal weight. I guess it just depends on which type resonates with the person dowsing.

I would like to hear what she says.

My faves are metal too, Lucian, with a distinct weight and balance to them . I've found that ( at least in my personal experience) that uncut crystaline forms are indeed far too easily influenced by EM. It could justbe a reflection of my own reactions to environment, but for whatever the reason I find they don't work well in electrically "cluttered" space.

I have a collection of pendulums,
I made one of them on a metal lathe out of aluminium myself.
The other ones are made from lapis, amethyst, clear quartz and brass.

It depends on the purpose for which the pendulum is used and the material that it is made of must be taken into account.
The pendulum of precious stone or metal should also be supplemental to your emotional deficits. EG someone with a melancholy attitude could be completely put out by using a dark obsidian or a steel one, and silver, flourite, aquamarine and rock crystal would be a better choice.

Its all about trying a few different types to see what is more accurate.
Sitting them for half an hour in the sun helps to recharge them them of any previous usage, or washing them on occasion in a running stream helps to attune them also. The pendulums should never be overused.

Use purified water to rinse them in, and salt can damage porous crystal ones.
The pendulums weight and length of thread or silver chain is important too, it should not be too long or it will lose its sensitivity to your energy.

Clarity of mind through meditation prior to use is also helpful and no distractive environment, it can be good to go out into nature for more accurate answers.
Make sure your questions are clear, and always ask questions in a positive manner like 'IS THIS IDEA GOOD?' instead of asking 'is this a bad (negative) idea.'

I find that making your own charts can be helpful, I make ones that are circular with around 13 segments for the answers to choose from, and one of them can say 'none of the answers on this chart'
Some people like to keep them wrapped up in boxes, some I leave near my potplants, its up to your intuition really on how you store them.
Hope this was informative. :)
