View Full Version : EYESYS game designs

I thought I'd post a few of the game
designs I've been working on...

Work started at the end of 2006, with the goal to
design and create a line of card and boardgames that
could be used to introduce, to those that are curious,
various 'abrahadabrian concepts' in an informal manner...

On with the fun and games... ;)

Next installment: the elemental and change decks of cards...

Excellent MM, tri-tangle in particular looks fascinating!

Have you worked on the rules (and can you share them :))?

:D OOO, eyes like bolts of lightning, tri-ing to see. Three cheers for bringing out your forms to the forum MM.

HoRaY, HoRaY, HoRaY, for the light that shines so bright !
HoRaY, HoRaY, HoRaY, cheers for change through day and night !

I look forward to the completion of your games:yes:

Thanks for the kind words...

Yes, I've got the rules for tri-tangle & Flower Power,
but I'm still working out possibilities for the game of change...

One problem is finding people to 'run'
the games with, to work out the kinks...

Playing these games with my kids is fun, but playing them with
a competitive buddy over drinks reveals other subtleties... ;)

Here's the deal...

The elemental deck is minor arcana only, and
with a few bonus cards will total 60 or so...

It was designed to be a substitute for
standard playing cards in gameplay...
______________

The change deck consists of 64 cards;
one for each hexagram of the I Ching...

It will be used to play the game of change,
as well as other games, including solitaire...
_______________________

I have constructed an entire change
deck, and it's really groovy...

I laminated both sides of each card with a clear label, which
stiffens the cards and improves the feel, while protecting...

Not exactly a quick process, but it produced a
great looking, and durable, working prototype...

Pick a card, any card:

Up next: adaptations of classic games...

Can't wait... ;)

Amazing work...the cards of the "Game of Change" are great, by the way, MythMath...

Thanks Kain...

Before the adapted classics though, I thought I'd drop
in the new board based on m1thr0s' twinstar motif...

The game is for 3 players with three pieces each...

Moves are determined by the roll of a standard die
and the pieces move along the lines defining the
colored stars, counting and resting on the intersections...

The 72-cell center glyph is not part of the play, but merely decorates
the 'holding tank' (where any captured pieces are sent back to)...

The play is similar to parcheesi, but here, the
moves consist of traveling only in a straight line,
with no deflections (until the player's next move)...

Hence the name:

Okay, onto the adaptations...

The genesis of the next game to be presented started with a
depiction of the Abrahadabra grid, as suggested by m1thr0s...

Which I then 'softened up' a bit through the
transformation into overlapping circles:

http://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q48/MythMath/earlyhexAbragrids.jpg

To me, the circle grid felt like a board in search of a game...

So, I began to look for a classic game whose
rules might be adapted to fit the board...

And I found a game that actually used that very board...

And that magical game had a magical name
(not to mention a fairly strange history)...

The name of the game was Hex (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hex_%28game%29)...

And since I could not improve upon this game's
flawless rule set, I merely 'upgraded' the graphics
and amalgamated the names of the ultimate sources:

The next adaptation was originally posted last year
on a different thread about card and boardgames...
___________________

Nearly 23 years ago, I developed a variant of the
venerable chessboard (iconoclast that I was)...

Having no knowledge at that time of the Lo Shu,
I could only call it, for obvious reasons:

9board: the expanded chessfield

http://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q48/MythMath/9boardwshadow.jpg

The pieces are set up as usual,
within the boundries of the 'center board'...

The Kings and Pawns must remain within the center board,
but all other pieces can travel anywhere among the nine...

All moves and other rules are identical to convention chess...

Being able to quickly maneuver and attack from
behind the lines makes this a bit like guerilla warfare...
_________________________________

While hovering over the board, focusing on the pieces, one is
quite likely to experience some weird peripheral visual effects...

To me, it appears that the board seems to warp, as if draped over a sphere... :p

That chess board is wild!!

Maybe you experimented and decided against it, but might it help to have a faint border around the traditional 8x8 square to delineate that space?

Also, have you played the game much.. I'm curious as to whether there's enough pieces for it to play well?

Bloody good work mate!

MythMath

I always liked the way the center board gets
'lost' and blends into the expanded field...

It does 'feel obvious' when playing,
though, where the borders are...

The gameplay on the big board overall, is pretty
fun and rewarding, albeit a bit disorienting... :o_O:

I've had various working prototypes of the board for over 20
years now, but I've probably played less than 20 games on 'em...

So, not really enough exposure to it to have
developed or established anything past the basics...

I've been ruminating on a variant that could be played
on a standard chessboard, using the Pawns and Kings...

I'm still working on the complete ruleset, but it looks promising...

This is the 'dedicated' board-in-progress, and its inevitable name is diagony:

diagony - rules and play
http://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q48/MythMath/diagonyearlydraftscopy.jpg

For 2 players.

Each player controls 8 Pawns and a King respectively.

A standard chessboard can be substituted for the diagony board.

Object:
Capture the opponent's King.

All moves are made in diagonal directions,
and all pieces must remain on light squares (lozenges).

White moves first, and each player's first
move is limited to travelling just one space.

Players alternate turns.

After each player's first turn, the Pawns can then travel in a
diagonal direction, any desired number of unobstructed spaces.

One piece has to be moved each turn, with no passing or forfeiting.

Pawns can capture any opponent's piece by targeting and
'biangulating' the opponent's piece along the ranks & files
(the non-diagonal rows and columns of a standard chessboard)
using two Pawns at right angles to, or inline with, the target.

Figure below shows the distinct methods by which two
black Pawns could biangulate and target a white Pawn:
http://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q48/MythMath/diagonycaptues.jpg

So, Pawns move along the light-colored diagonal paths, but
capture opponents by targeting along the rows and columns.

It is possible to move one Pawn and simultaneously set up targeting
opportunities to capture two (or more) of the opponent's pieces.

Also, if a player moves into a crossfire situation, the opponent has
to move another piece (other than a piece involved in the crossfire)
before taking the targeted piece.
________________________________________

The Kings can only move diagonally one square at a time, and can capture
diagonally, any opponent's piece within that range by assuming its square.

Captured pieces are removed from the board and from play.

wow, amazing- the chessboard is my new fav trance inductor! and I like the design of the first one very much- the triangle&lightning bolts, reminds me a bit of that one james bond movie where he plays that 80s videogame with the bad guy- for world domination, the loser gets electric shocks.

I've been thinking about all our resident chessplayers that would
possibly enjoy this new game that utilizes gear they already own...

So I'm presenting Diagony in standard chess iconography:

http://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q48/MythMath/diagony-for-chess-players.jpg

I'm not suggesting that this layout could not be
gleaned by looking at the previous graphics,
but I'm just encouraging folks to try this game out...

Share it with friends in your neck of the
woods and let me know if anyone digs it...

My son prompted me to adapt the recent
18 points on a Tetrahedron series (http://forums.abrahadabra.com/showpost.php?p=30692&postcount=73) into a gameboard...

Then he suggested the name:
