I had an interesting occurance the other night, I awoke during the early hours to hear an owl hooting in the street, then my eyes grew heavy.
The next thing I remember is hearing someone shout and my head was with the sensation of intense vibration and all I could hear was loud buzzing, like a bee hive. My sight was different, being narrow like tunnel vision, and I couldnt feel my body.
It took effort to will myself back.
Is this a normal occurance during the beginning of conscious astral travel? or are these phenomena something other?
As for the owl, I did think of Goddess Athena the other day

I think that suddenly awaking to an owl hooting set off your alert system in your body and maybe a mild panic attack though you may have only been aware of some of the symptoms of this like head buzzing etc.
Ordinary biological reaction I would say.
I think it's most auspicious baenheh...thanks for sharing this. I should note that this kind of auditory percpetion accompanied with the visual effects etc is most natural for early stages of Kundalini work (I mention this because I know you are engaging in this sort of work).
Sat-cakra-nirupana (Description of the 6 Centres), a most interesting ancient text on the particulars of the practice of Layayoga, describes it thus in verse 11: "Her shining snake-like form goes three and a half times around Shiva*, and her lustre is as that of a strong flash of young strong lightning. Her sweet murmur is like the indistinct hum of swarms of love-mad bees**."
*In the Muladhara.
**Visvanatha, an important ancient commentator of the text, notes that this is the sound it makes while in the process of awakening.
I think it is a normal occurance for astral travel (not mere astral projection), as it would be described as an out of body experience. I have experienced it in the early stages of pracrice quite often, and still do quite regularly. My earliest notes on the subject (much earlier than the time I had read any of these texts), around puberty, describe the sound as that of the mild pulsation of a 'motionless lightsaber'. Different generations have different impressions I guess...lol...the point is though, it is well documented and expected. Initially, I would get it while in the relaxation of near-sleep states, but I later on managed to maintain it not only there but in my daily practices and often in a large portion of my day altogether.
You will probably hear other sounds as well as you move in deeper. You may also find that the sound itself mutates to a different sound etc...
I hope you find this helpful,
Kain
EDIT: Interesting you posted this baenheh. I had in mind to make a post about this sound today, as I was brushing through that text last night and I stopped reading in verse 11...hehe...synchronicities are interesting in this forum. I think Ricci and a few other here would also agree...
Good to hear you found it helpful Konstantin. These are quite standard experiences really, but for some reason they are not often discussed...

Hypnagogia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypnagogia) may be the underlying culprit here as well. The thing is that this state coordinates effectively with "bilocation" states more commonly associated to Astral Projection. So it might be possible to get a kind of fusion going on between both states. As a matter of fact, the most commonly reported astral projection phenomenum by far occurs either going into or coming out of sleep states, where people have repeatedly experienced suddenly getting stuck in the bilocation state etc. If you have already been working with Kundalini techniques, the odds would tend to be increased that something of this sort might happen...
Nothing conclusive mind you...just a little additional food for thought.

Interesting, thanks for that link m1thr0s...

Thanks Kain and M1thros, for both of your inputs about this.
I have been doing a lot of kundalini work and witnessing some of the unconscious material surface to clear out of the lower chakras.
I have also been working on the back chakras where a lot of the programmed material is.
Its like washing away impressions out of the cellular DNA and breathing or absorbing light into every cell to refine or align.
So that might have something to do with the experience, as Kain would know its when you lie down that kundalini continues its own alignment.
Its happened to me before where the top of my torso has been lifted off the bed for a second, whilst my body goes so relaxed or limp.
There has also been a small popping noise at the base of the neck on occasion whilst awake.
