Meditation has proven to be effective against crime. In India, the female supercop, Kiran Bedi, introduced yoga and meditation among the prisoners, and a dramatic change was observed in them after practicing for some days. The success of this innovation has resulted in a trend in India, with yoga and meditation courses being offered to prisoners in many prisons.

In England, there is a School in Skelmersdale in Lancashire where they use meditation. It started about twenty years ago and the school reports and exam results are said to be much improved. Apparently, many children are doing well in arts and creative writing and the parents and teachers believe it is due to the meditation sessions.

The school was featured on the TV or radio because the achievements and behaviour of the children was markedly improved compared to equal status schools and there was very little law or rule breaking here.

Thank u for this information.

Here is what a female swedish friend of mine said to me after I posted a similar thread in an another forum.

<<<<I canīt remember if I told about this earlier but there was a case a few months ago when guards had forgotten to lock a section of violent prisoners in Sweden. Normally, they would have gone wild, but now they baked a cake, watched a movie and talked together and then went to sleep. They explained this partly by having practiced meditation. >>>> :)

Further to the meditation in schools, I was reading in todays Independent (UK) that someone called Howard Goodall is trying to promote singing in schools. He says it is good for community building, is good for concentration and has no side-effects. It builds self esteem and morale and as the meditation does, it improves behaviour and its free.

Meditation alters brain patterns in ways that are likely permanent, scientists have known. But a new study shows key parts of the brain actually get thicker through the practice.
Brain imaging of regular working folks who meditate regularly revealed increased thickness in cortical regions related to sensory, auditory and visual perception, as well as internal perception -- the automatic monitoring of heart rate or breathing, for example.
The study also indicates that regular meditation may slow age-related thinning of the frontal cortex.
