I have set us up with a new attachment option for flash (swf) files of not too great a size (5 mb limit). Members can now upload or open these attachments in their own browsers...save only that browsers alone are not really set up to read swf files outside of html formatting. They will usually work but the performance is crap since browers are not designed for swf files but html+ pages. To read these files correctly you will want to download a standalone flash player that can open flash files independantly at the sizes they were originally created at.

As a matter of form I am asking anyone who uploads these attachments to try to also provide a conventional website link where they can be viewed without the standalone player, but this may not be possible in all cases. There are several very good free standalone flash players out there. I am using macromedia's own standalone flash player 8 which works just fine. It's an entirely self-contained executable file that can be put on your desktop or wherever you like and won't interfere with web browsing otherwise...

we'll give this a shot and see how it goes. The script that makes this sort of inline viewing of flash files possible for vBulletin also includes a range of other media files that can be turned on if we like. I'm going to start with the flash files and give it a trial run...

note: as most people may already know, there are certain risks involved with flash files. it is strongly advised that you maintain a good anti-virus program as well as a good spyware detection /removal program on your personal computers. Moreover, I think the advantages outweigh the risks in this instance but we will have to test these assumptions out to be sure.

Anyone found abusing these attachments or uploading currupted files will summarily be banned without further discussion. I'm not playing around with this sh*t at all...your best bet is to virus-check your files before you upload. I will not accept ignorance as a suitable defense on this matter. That aside, I think it will be nice to have this new option...

note: here's a link to Adobe's standalone flash players page (a little hard to find on their mammoth site...):

note2: the developer of this attachments script has recommended that media attachments do not exceed one attachment per post. Please adhere to this or you posts will be deleted. There are potential vBulletin performance issues at risk here.
