Kitsune are a foundational element of far eastern mythology both in China and especially Japan, where the Kitsune, or Fox Spirit enjoyed the most renown. Kitsune literally means "Fox" but in Shinto magic, everything has a spiritual form, one might say, a interlinked "Body of Light" that can manifest in weird ways in the world at large.
Wikipedia offers an excellent introduction to the mythos, which needs to be studied before getting into the various intricacies of the Kitsune.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kitsune
Foxes and human beings lived in close proximity in ancient Japan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ancient_Japan); this companionship gave rise to legends about the creatures. Kitsune have become closely associated with Inari (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inari_%28mythology%29), a Shinto (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shinto) kami (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kami) or spirit, and serve as his messengers. This role has reinforced the fox's supernatural significance. The more tails a kitsune has — they may have as many as nine — the older, wiser, and more powerful it is. Because of their potential power and influence, some people make offerings (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sacrifice) to them as to a deity.
Inari is a strange deity. I once invoked him/her/it allowing myself to fully merge with the form, while simultaneously having sex with a Tengu and I felt my mind extend outwards into the complex network of marshy rice fields just coming into bloom at the time. This was in Japan I believe because the daylight looked about right to be the correct timezone in contrast to my own hours. Elegance, sovereignity and femininity were the strongest vibrations in the intelligence and I didn't pick up on the reputed masculine aspect asserted in books on Shintoism. The Tengu and her got along for about 10 minutes after which she became completely disgusted with something he said - or didn't say, and she departed quietly without another word. Yeah I finished with the Tengu myself.
The most powerful kitsunes have 9 tails - I've discussed the potency of the number nine elsewhere. (Dragon thread) Aside from the number nine, which is the peak of the Kitsune's power, I believe it takes a thousand years to attain the ninth tail, the number two is also important. Traditional Inari shrines are flanked by two white fox spirits. I find symmetry of two animals surrounding an obscure dual-sex deity interesting, much the way the Ningishzidda symbol is portrayed. Ningishzidda's symbol is the winged dragon cat with the scorpion tail, which is quite a bit more threatening and dangerous.
The fox in Japan is given the nature of illusionist and trickster, they are mistresses of magic and deception who can cause unwitting prey (aka men) to stray down the path to madness. This isn't done maliciously, rather, it's a function of their overpowering attraction to human males and their desire to unite their realm with the human realm. Occasionally the situation ends happily, with the kitsune siring half-breed humans who become powerful magicians or adept warriors attuned to the celestial abode. Kitsunes allied to Inari are considered benevolent, it is the wild ones with no allegiance that are dangerous.
Edit:
A good way to test if some girl is a kitsune or not is not to drag them in front of a mirror or look at their shadow. Put them under a lit crystal chandelier. If they stare at it for more than 10 seconds at any given time they are definately a kitsune. Also watch out for attraction to sparkly things or shops that carry lots of sparkly things - usually not jewelry stores, more like those teenage stores that carry lots of glittery shit in them. They also like peacock feathers.
Just like the Tengu, Kitsune were considered to be real beings in all parts of Japan and if you consider the tales of the vast region of China and India surrounding Tamamo-No-Mae, throughout the world as well. The stories of the fox and raven link is as old as Aesop in the Western world.

Aside from the number nine, which is the peak of the Kitsune's power, I believe it takes a thousand years to attain the ninth tail, the number two is also important.
I think it also could be understood as: growing an additional (second) tail from a 1000yrs + of age:
Physically, kitsune are noted for having as many as nine tails.[12] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kitsune#_note-Smyers129) Generally, a greater number of tails indicates an older and more powerful fox; in fact, some folktales say that a fox will only grow additional tails after it has lived 1,000 years.A very well done article, written by a pro no doubt.
In Japan I met the most authetic manifestation of a kitsune in a human woman. Accidentally she herself wasnt Japanese but Chinese, but had lived there for a long time. She was a prof for Chinese literature and tbh one of the most amazing human beings I have ever met. A friend introduced me to her, cause I wanted to join her Chinese language class. She was petite w the typical cat like features and coloured her hair roussette (redish brown)...even though it looked as if it hadnt been coloured cause it fit her so perfectly, very amazing eyes too. She was not in high standing with the other profs and there was lots of gossip that she always picked herself some pretty boyfriends amongst the students- esp. the foreign ones-..yeah maybe those rumors were even true and she also liked me a lot but she wasnt vulgar or anything and very educated (literature), which I value very much as you know..we were close friends for about 3 weeks...but she had probs afterwards etc and we drifted apart...
Another fox I knew was yet another Japanese woman but only a normal friend to me- she was in her late 40s- I liked to go drinking and eating with her- something in her face when she told stories made me laugh- she often smirked when she told about some mischief that happened to others and her eyes narrowed funnily then, she was real fun too...well, I ve know many others of course too...foxes know not human justice true; "justice" is non understandable to them, but they know about fairness in every sense of the word.

lol great stories Kuroyagi, it's unusual you know, to be able to see them. True but that same sense of real fairness is what makes them so annoying!
It could be said that kitsune are incarnated fire elementals but they are united with air and have an imbalance of water which makes them a bit loopy...
I am a card carrying member of the fox clan, but more than that because I have been dog clan since the macrocosmic universe began this cycle 13 billion years ago. See I earned a right to other things like honorary memberships in naga clan, ox clan and dragon clan later on. Some things I know nothing about, like boar clan or phoenix clan, or Most of the kitsune you think of as traditional kitsune are still just in training, learning and earning the way of the fox, and so they are sometimes stupid or troublesome. All kitsune are terrors and up to no good in some way but the most effective ones always serve the will of heaven because that is where they are from, even though it is said they come from "below" the abyss - original fire. That is a scary place...
Anyways Ningishzidda knows all about them too I bet. He probably created all of them...I know there are none outside of his domain. Kitsune are not original wolves, you know, they simply arise from that archetype...

Interesting views, of course extreme (hard core as you say) as all that comes through your "lens"...so if they start as mere fire elementals then I must say they have an inclination for developement dont you think? The higher ones are even revered as Kami- or seen as lesser gods...
How do you mean "card carrying" is that a metaphor or do you refer to a real life Indian tribe where you are member like in some "club" or whatever  (the other clans are of course obviously meant more "sub specie eternitatis"...in context of eternity)...yes in many tales foxes and dogs dont harmonize well: tally ho! (and arent wolf and dog the same?)! I myself have no idea what clan Id be myself cause Ive never thought about it- thats how I am: as I dont know what the different clans are can you write an intro?, phoenix sounds cool though and I personally like fox from outside...also Im born in a tiger year...do you know the relation between tiger and dragon- is it very bad? I personally like some aspects of dragons (there are of course many differing types inside the clans too dont you think?)...how did you "earn" that right to be multi claned...etc? Somehow I am all of them or whatever but thinking of it I like none unquestioningly- maybe Im of a clan that doesnt exist in this universe anymore...? :o_O:
Respect!

Oh yes, there are big kitsune and little kitsune. I should say...many little kitsune humans are recycled souls..
What happens after uncreation is not so bad, you see. Makes you new and fresh. Some people even volunteer for the process, or a partial uncreation. I am not one of them, it's probably why I know alot. None of Seijuro did anyways...I think you can do it and still remain a Shadowdancer, but you would only submerge one of your aspects. For instance, Adam....woah lol!
Still people are afraid of being reworked.
Wolves HATE dogs, lol, they offend their sensibilities see, serving monkeys as they do...
You're playing dumb too, and I'm not biting on this one...lol

No, very old. For instance, 7 billion years ago I was a naga and a kitsune within a span of about a million years both, in the same galaxy - very close proximity.

Cut away your illusions. ;) I believe that I am the one who knows best what are you talking about of all who are here and even of all who were on seijuro (shit, Oazaki took ALL about Vsra from you! and nobody else. he hadnt a fucking clue! dont you see that you played them all and that was the reason that I said that I went there because of YOU?) you must realize that, and think about whats real! If youre the only one who believes or knows a thing then youre fucked!! its true...thats why youre such a good magician cause you have the power to make realities come true for others and in that others believe!) but I dont know all, either, this is complicated stuff you know it...yet if you suppose that that is some lack of understanding on my part then you'll be real fucked I can guarantee you that, you loonie.;)

Are you not a divine incarnated being from beyond the parameters of the triumvirate?
Kuroyagi
08-01-2007, 09:38 PM
Whats the triumvirate? Again YOUR magical creation, "illusion" as all of reality is. You use it now as some kind of backdoor to shoot me down: If I say (no or: I have no idea about this shit- then I will be "out of the game" that is the "excuse" for you...cheap!)
Ah is it that easy to fall from grace with you? Even though you "checked me out on the astral" even though you said so many favourable things about me? Strange isnt it?, Maga? Doesnt it make you doubt your abilities? Well me not.
And theres no doubt that Oazaki is also a good magician, yet you are also. The things about Vsra are your making after all...no doubt that he also taught you much, as he taught me a lot too.
Let me tell you: there are two things relevant to magic: 1- is self awareness which you lack (and thats why I stand above you in this respect), and 2 -is the ability to convince yourself and others (here I can learn much from you still)..by any means, at that (also this, m1thr0s, system is founded on it- as is all science, too- thats why this here is so good!), dont you see it likewise?
And having said all that: I also like you. :)

I'm not shooting you down so maybe we are having a communication problem. No I didn't make up Vrsa it was a real planet and also the naga-kitsune homeworlds belonged to a real galaxy, I have it written down somewhere, it was discovered by Nasa, the time coordinates match up and even the history matches to the T from what I retrieved. I always follow my leads somewhat scientifically, if people give me a chance I get into it but most people just write me off as a chaos magician making shit up or a looney.
I'm a hermit and a scholar and sharing all of this is really new. See, I didn't start until I found Sebastian and everything he knew I already knew so it was very profound for me, and he kept encouraging me to share my discoveries and talk more openly and honestly and not be so hidden.
I know I'm a good magician Kuroyagi, I do a lot of stuff with it, a lot of really nasty stuff so I don't need to prove anything to anyone. I see it everyday so I come across as not being sure of myself right?
Well I already know you like me. I just don't understand what you're trying to tell me. And I have a headache from Sebastian trying to check me out and figure out what I am doing at the moment. Ningishzidda is going to bite him at any second now.
Anyways cheers. This conversation is getting a little weird for the people not in our zone, you know...I've had enough distress today...
Self-awareness, what do you mean?
Triumvirate Brahma-Siva-Vishnu, the creation bubble which we are dismantling and rebuilding. Galaxy local...erm...the Milky Way Galaxy is running some stuff through our region at the moment.
Anyways like I Said I don't want trouble so I'm just going to stfu.
edit:
yes I know the entire Seijuro crew thinks I have lost my mind. Sorry. At least we succeeded. let me go for a while...

No I of all dont think that youre crazy- let me remind you that I accompanied you from the moment you were joining the lightworker thread and that I alone never was "cold" about your experiences form then on, and also how much cool stuff we did in coopertaion from then on.
What I want is to synchronize our views more and openly discuss with you every point you make and compare our views,I want to do that somewhere in public-its necessary- but this here is OT, so we can come back to it hopefully somewhere someday. I know that Vsra is real but you also made it up of course, High Magical Art Theory wise...(also for triumvirate cf. Caesar Pompeius Grassus and youd be Kleopatra etc.).
Ok youre right lets leave it here, but I want to continue this and ask you about it w/o you supposing that I play stupid I want you to explain more thats all (somewhere public). Thanks and *gongon*! as the kitsune say!

Guys, I need your help.
I think I've been possessed by a kitsune during a rave and it got me in touch with a mafia boss which I believe has an old noble emperor aura. How can I explain him we were cut into a legend tale becoming reality? How can other people believe me? That this stuff happens when power and illumination results in occurances like these? Even my real name ressembles the Genkuro kitsune.
Check this outTricksters
The Fushimi Inari shrine in Kyoto features numerous kitsune statues.
Kitsune are often presented as tricksters, with motives that vary from mischief to malevolence. Stories tell of kitsune playing tricks on overly proud samurai, greedy merchants, and boastful commoners, while the crueler ones abuse poor tradesmen and farmers or devout Buddhist monks. Their victims are usually men; women are possessed instead.[18] For example, kitsune are thought to employ their kitsune-bi or fox-fire to lead travelers astray in the manner of a will o' the wisp.[47][48] Another tactic is for the kitsune to confuse its target with illusions or visions.[18] Other common goals of trickster kitsune include seduction, theft of food, humiliation of the prideful, or vengeance for a perceived slight.
A traditional game called kitsune-ken (fox-fist) references the kitsune's powers over human beings. The game is similar to rock, paper, scissors, but the three hand positions signify a fox, a hunter, and a village headman. The headman beats the hunter, whom he outranks; the hunter beats the fox, whom he shoots; the fox beats the headman, whom he bewitches.[49][50]
Kitsune keep their promises and strive to repay any favor. Occasionally a kitsune attaches itself to a person or household, where they can cause all sorts of mischief. In one story from the 12th century, only the homeowner's threat to exterminate the foxes convinces them to behave. The kitsune patriarch appears in the man's dreams.
Tales distinguish kitsune gifts from kitsune payments. If a kitsune offers a payment or reward that includes money or material wealth, part or all of the sum will consist of old paper, leaves, twigs, stones, or similar valueless items under a magical illusion.[56][57] True kitsune gifts are usually intangibles, such as protection, knowledge, or long life.[57]

I like the kitsune but I desise the Western foxes, their depiction is disgusting..well, maybe not what your looking for but Naomi has thaught me to talk like that- "I Hate" and "I like" theres nothing else in the world of kitsune too, but if you made some mistake or played a trick on someone and he catches you, then you either should be completely honest and tell him, or you should persist in your lies even till it sounds even incredible to yourself and that sometimes the point where others believe you....and run quickly or play yet another trick... *Edited* personal insults not acceptable. This is both Off and On topic, but there is this great anime film that deals with metamorphosis, pollution, kitsune and a bunch of other stuff.

I highly recommend it... if you enjoy serious cartoons and the occult then this one is for you.
Also there is plenty of Fox to feast on..
(Disney had nothing to do with the film, they in fact made sure us westerners would not be able to see it for many years... but with the arrival of the internet and such things they had to give up so now they got the rights to the eng-dubbed version - scumbags)

Yes, that movie is fun (in original its called: tanuki gassen pompoko), its about tanuki (racoons) though as far as I can remember. Tanuki are witty and hedonist, yea also cheerful and very much absorbed by lucullic pleasures (food and drink) and cunning but also a bit selfish and their tempers can change quickly- but not as nastily so as kitsune IMO, racoons are less wise though...I'll watch that again sometime!

yes i think so - kitsune can be whatever they want - until you run them through with a sword - and not just any sword will do, it has to be the sword of heaven...
