I learned something new today - ya'll probably know of this before... and I feel stupid having never thought about it. But the dark area between the horizon and the color of the sunset is the shadow of Earth itself... pretty cool! Sometimes I am so ignorant, good thing I went to the Natural History Museum...

Woah I didn't know that.

Thanks for not letting me be alone on this ignorance, because it seems like a thing everyone should know... like the fact that milk gets sour if you live it out in the sun!

Hey I also didnt know that, I mean cant know everything...I love sunsets btw- my fav time of the day...nice pic- it has the effect on me that it seems to draw near from its centre, hmm maybe just too much screen gazing...
This reminds me that "we" know not too much anyway: e.g. I was surprised to hear that modern science cant even explain decisively and with clarity why it gets dark at night! True! The sun isnt important there- (cf. eg: http://science.howstuffworks.com/question691.htm of course they only have theories and myths...
I have the answer to it but humans- esp. scientists- cant understand it yet.

Tell me about it... don't want to say things twice so my point is HERE (http://forums.abrahadabra.com/showpost.php?p=25025&postcount=2)
Also took this picture a year ago, at dusk or dawn - forget now... anyway it is Stockholm!

Ahhh- what a great photo! This is why its so great to be alive, dont you think?
Yes I pretty much agree with you there. There are many things that science has found out and that are great- but there are some that havent checked out, yet..the brain, the universe...etc as you said...
To state it bluntly- I think one of the reasons for night- for "it" getting dark is: that human beings NEED it to get dark, they need a nightside, its in our in *their* structure...they need a yin for their yang so to speak, but try telling this to a scientist...

The artistes have always understood, however:
"It's always night, or we wouldn't need light." - Thelonious Sphere Monk (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thelonious_Monk) (1917-1982)

Yeah we have to supplement it in ourselves, just as we have to construct visions if we stare into darkness too long- I love that guy!

human beings... need a nightside.
:yinyang:
If I would choose eternal day or eternal night I would choose eternal day (even though I rather have eternal night, but the world will get so polluted because we use so much energy when it is dark (http://thedark-deviadah.blogspot.com/))!
Anyway... the sad thing is we rarely watch the sunrise, or sunset. I've been on trains many times at sunset and seen the most spectacular shit in the horizon and none of the other passangers can be asked to look. To busy with the sports section of whatever Murdoch Paper they are reading!
There are not enough Peak Experiences (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peak_experiences) for the human race; could be the reason the world is such a crazy zoo!

Although what we actually HAVE is eternal night, where 'day' is a relative sub-set of that night. Night is in relation to the whole cosmos, while day is in relation to only a single star at a time...

Yes that is true, and let's be thankful for that or we'll have to wear our long-johns all year round. See THIS (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WNZwrgFo3GE)
