Just recording an insight I had. It might be argued that a magickal act is sortof absurd. If I make a talisman and think that it causes the desired effect, I believe that would be mistaken. There is no causal connection between the act and the result. However, what does seem to cause the efect is *refined desire* or Will. The act is then simply a prism, or prop (samech?) which is necesarry to refine the desire from a passive wish into an active, living desire. This desire seems to perhaps 'select' a reality that expresses it. A good magickal act then is like a clean lens: there is minimal noise. This opens the possibility of 'direct will' magick (ie simple willing the universe to change magickally, without outside ritual or symbolic action), or the use of mundane activities and encounters as magickal talismans. A moment in time, or memory as a talisman. Our cat is lost. Despite thinking that I have done all I can, I have some more posters to put up... maybe it's not the posters that will bring back the cat, but the fact that I can overcome the inertia of my own exhaustion to put them up... the desire that comes from that focus. The act as if effect...
Also, chanting, or Glossalalia... in the last few years I have found myself able to chant 'nonsense' syllables, but have found that I am developing a private vocabulary or language. I do not know what it means intellectually: I may use the same word to focus different wishes, but all I know, is if I have a desire, I can 'speak it' in this language (the words will come of their own accord) which acts as the prism to determing such a wish as a willed act... I am able thus to accentuate rare moments, like finding a floating feather while walking down the street, and enchanting, through song, the act of catching it as it falls, sending that act as a personal offering, or act of prayer, to the universe (and to myself in the future, holding it as a memory) along with my most pressing current desire. Let our lovely feline companion return. Off to work I go.
