I - Introduction

Most Enochian lessons deal almost entirely with the theoretical material, which is, of course, vast and complex. Indeed, all of that which is so far covered in these lessons is but a fraction of the entire Enochian material out there, and some of the work that is not covered here would be far too complicated and convoluted to discuss in depth. However, it is my intent that this primer be both practical as well as theoretical, so once you have gained a strong knowledge of the foundation material (that is, the material described in previous sections), you can follow some of the guidelines for beginning Enochian Magick shared here.

Before I begin I must stress that these are merely guidelines. Dee did not receive simple and easy-to-follow instructions on using the system, so we have to make do with our intuition, practical experience, and the guidance of the Angels in modern times.

II - Preliminary Magickal Training

Firstly I suggest that the student ensure that they have a strong foundation in general Ceremonial Magick before commencing with Enochian work. This was reserved for Adeptus Minor and above in the Golden Dawn for a reason, and using it without experience in less complex and dangerous systems will offer little result, or, indeed, negative result.

Art a minimum I suggest the following rituals be thoroughly learned and practised for a lengthy period:

Qabalistic Cross (QC)

Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram (LBRP)

Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Hexagram (LBRH)

Middle Pillar Ritual (MPR)

Some form of Solar Adoration (Thelemic, Golden Dawn, or other)

It is important that the student perform the LBRP for a period of at least six months to ensure appropriate results, and then you may move onto the next ritual. Starting them all at the same time may muddle results or may serve to confuse the student in regards to which ritual is giving which result/s. The above rituals are usually seen as the generic requirements in most magickal Orders and groups (and also in solo practice). They may be substituted for others when the student has become magickally proficient.

I also suggest a thorough study of the Qabalah, not only for the benefits it offers in terms of the above rituals, and not only for its own intrinsic benefits, but because Enochian Magick is geared on certain Qabalistic premises, and the Angels tend to use Qabalistic terminology, ideas, etc., to express things. Dee was also a renowned Qabalist in his time, so I think it's best to educate ourselves as much as we can to the standard of Dee (however difficult that may be, given his vast array of knowledge and study). Recommendations for the Qabalah can be found elsewhere.

Once the above has been thoroughly learned, practised, and assimilated, it is important to train the imagination and skrying abilities. For this I recommend Benjamin Rowe's "A Short Course In Skrying" (attached below), as well as the skrying of the Hebrew Letters. For the latter I have attached a document used in the O.'.S.'.D.'.L.'. for Basic Skrying. It gives full instructions on the recommended procedure for skrying Hebrew Letters (which can then be adapted for the Enochian Letters later).

When skrying, I suggest that the student don't overdo it. To begin with, one letter a week is more than sufficient. This can be increased in time. The skrying of the Hebrew and Enochian letters is actually an initiatory experience, and thus should not be rushed. Likewise, the instructions given by Ben Rowe will take a number of weeks/months to complete to satisfaction; this is a long-term process.
