Ramalinga Swamigal, popularly known as Vallalar, was one of the most notable saints on the Indian sub-continent during the 19th century. He was born on October 5, 1823, in Marudur near Chidambaram into a Hindu Saivite family, the fifth child and last son of his father Ramayya Pillai and mother Chinnammayyar.
He had no regard for the ‘Puranas’, ‘Vadas’, and the ‘Agamas’. He worshiped god as light (jyothi) and was a man of utmost love and compassion for all the living creatures. It is said that he would weep at the sight of even a withering crop. He firmly believed in anna dana or free offering of food to the needy.
Vallalar left the world on January 30, 1874 at age 51

I get the impression from all of this the morbid feeling that humanity just doesn't quite know what to do about what it means to be a god, they encounter these people who have bridged the gap between their selves and the absolute but they can't quite seem to understand how to make that selfish leap themselves.

Because it is selfish...one merely has to be selfish on part of entire universe, and not their bodies...that's where it all goes wrong I think.

People think selflessness means suffering and abandonment of the material, and that's just not the case. By acting for oneself in a positive universe affirming manner one serves all being naturally without friction or pain. but what do I know...
