It is - light's a powerful thing so it's not surprising he would have inadvertantly stumbled upon it during his studies of photons, though I'm fairly sure he didn't recognize the triangle grid itself as the real value.
Color is a powerful tool in itself, I was reading some of the stories on this site:

I studied color theory in school but there was a newer and more modern approach being taken to it that is quite far removed from the old RGB paradigm...the research lately has destroyed many old myths about color.
