Thanks for the hippy vid. I'm really interested in that era. I have a soft spot for them, which friends have criticized me for. I'm told that they didn't really do anything but sit around and get high while spreading diseases. On the other hand, some say they were hypocrites for not continuing to live out their ideals. Personally, I think they are a cultural equivalent to a manic high. I still think they were right about quite a bit, except they weren't very grounded about it, and at some point it became less and less about empowering individualism. On the other hand I also agree with the sentiment that their ideas have continued and evolved under different guises.

They took the torch from the beats.
Who has the torch now? I guess there are a few little bonfires all over, in different movements. The Internet has increased the speed at which the ideas spread.

Who has the torch now?
I do!
:p
Seriously the growth of the Esoteric movement is quite intense... but I really see the coming of an age of individuals as a unity, rather than groupings. But then again I might just confuse reality with personal dreams!

You know, I re-read what I wrote earlier and decided I'm being silly. What I admire about the hippy movement was the open-minded creativity, and the challenging of ideas, enjoying pleasure, and all out non-conformity. I look at some of the things that came out of the 80's and 90's, and all I can say is that if the 60's lasted forever, I'd be bored out of my fucking skull. Those things that I admire cannot be contained in any one movement. Being nostalgic is dumb, especially when you never experienced what your being nostalgic about. Fuck it.

i've lived on the fringe my whole life pretty much. and i think i like to wrap myself in the ideals of the hippies and the beats, at least in some part the joyfull idealism..bohemia though will always re-emerge in varying forms to counter the memes of the day i guess.

I think your right. I was once approached on the street by a random person in a crowd who wanted to read tarot for me. (he was pretty good, by the way) At one point he told me I was a hippy in my past life. Now, personally I believe in an underlying collective consciousness. It's possible that underneath we can experience what others have in the past or future (maybe all those people who claimed to be Crowley in a past life weren't all wrong, no matter how dorky they may be now) But when I started dwelling on it, those hippy ideals are an aspect of human spirit. So maybe the movement of the 60's was an extreme reaction to society at the time, where events brought out those parts of the human spirit that were otherwise repressed. Still, those aspects exist in all of us.

All that Sex, Drugs and Rock n Roll stuff didn't hurt
(in bringing out those parts of the human spirit) either... :p
