Hello all! Doing some thinking in the past, I have come to some conclusions about God and Big Brother. God, of course being in Christianity, Judaism etc. and Big Brother being in 1984.
I wrote this to my dad a little bit ago, and this is the first draft of it, so if it seems loose or whatever, that's why. I'll upload the revised draft once I get it from my dad.
Here it is, tell me what you guys think:
GOD IS BIG BROTHER
Think about it. If you do not believe in God and are not born again, then you will go to hell. And I've heard that if you (this is from a Christian afterlife site, pretty interesting actually.) pray for forgiveness and all of that, long enough, you can possibly eventually make it out of hell. If you do not follow Big Brother, then you go to Room 101. (Room 101 I think, the one where they "reform" you, either torture you like they did Winston and make you believe in Big Brother again, or just kill you.) Also, no one has seen Big Brother, just as no one has seen God. Also, God can basically do anything right? Well, so can the Party, which is under Big Brother’s control, just as countless seraphs, archangels, angels etc. are under God’s control. They can basically do anything, if they wanted O’Brien to float, he could float, just like God.
Hell = Room 101
You go to hell, you are being punished. Eternally, (or, there is probably a way to get out of hell, but most will probably stay in there.) and you also get eternally punished (sort of) by going to Room 101, for your mind get's controlled. You go to Room 101, for you were being bad (rebellious, etc.) and you also go to Hell for being bad also.
Also, most if not all people in 1984 fear Big Brother, as most, if not all, Christians fear God. Hell is the incentive for being good, and following God, as execution/torture (Room 101, although no-one really knows about Room 101, they know about the Ministry of Love, which is basically the torture place.) is the incentive for being good, and following Big Brother.
God’s Love and Wrath = Big Brother’s Love and Wrath
This is pretty self-explanatory. Whenever someone rejected God, and tried to rebel etc. than he dealt with it personally. (This is pretty much only in the Old Testament) Whenever one tribe of God went against another one, which won? Of course the one with God, and usually God crushed his enemies. Big Brother did the same. There were three superpowers or super-states, I’m not sure which, and Big Brother took over one and was more powerful with the other. There were also examples of this both in the Bible and 1984, basically as people sitting there and confessing to crimes, and then getting hung for it. Many people disobeyed God, and were punished for it. For instance, Cain was, and he is mentioned many times, and so was Nimrod, Satan, a lot of fallen angels, etc. Also, Adam and Eve went against God, and they were punished eternally for it. Big Brothers is a tyrant, and God is too, basically, both can be wrapped up as FOLLOW OR ELSE. For instance, Job comes to mind here. God let Satan do anything he wanted to Job, to test his obedience. All Job had been destroyed. And then when he still followed God, he got twice the stuff he previously had. This is like Big Brother. Winston didn’t follow The Party, and he went to The Ministry of Love, and went to Room 101, and got tortured, and after that, when he was obedient to Big Brother, he got a major part on the Newspeak Dictionary. Like God, Job got twice he had after he lost everything, and still loved God, even though he was responsible for all of it. Winston got a major part on the Newspeak Dictionary, after he got tortured, and then loved Big Brother after that.
Satan = Goldstein
In 1984, Goldstein was the scapegoat, to where anything that was wrong was usually blamed on him (I think, I’m pretty sure on this, but I can’t be altogether sure, since I don’t remember that much.) and he was the bad guy of the group. So is Satan in Christianity. Both are blamed for a lot of things they didn’t even do. For instance, Emmanuel Goldstein wasn’t that bad. He was trying to show people how bad Big Brother actually was. He was trying to show people the truth, but they wouldn’t and couldn’t really listen. They just thought he was evil and Big Brother was the greatest. The Party also created Goldstein, as God did Satan.
Satan is the same way. For example, he has never lied. God was the one that got all mad about Adam and Eve’s rebellion (eating the apple) and Satan said that you wouldn’t die, for God knows your eyes will open. He has also never killed anyone. He isn’t the Father of Lies. Actually, Cain is! MAN IS THE FATHER OF LIES.
Ignorance is Strength
This is big in both God and Big Brother. If people actually knew that Big Brother is a tyrant, tortures people, etc. then they wouldn’t follow him. Same thing with God. There has been more wars in the name of God than any else. Basically, not many people know that much about God, all of the Bible has been edited, written, translated by people. All of those men could have lied. Also, the Hebrew Bible, from what I've heard, the un-translated one, has many differences than the newer ones. Also, the Bible is not complete. And, an old age question, Does God exist is not a question. As Christopher S. Hyatt stated, is not a question. You cannot prove that God exists. You can also not prove that God doesn’t exist. So, the question becomes absurd. Another thing: Jesus was the son of man. I forget the name right now. Another few things. The Bible is irrational. Totally irrational, for instance, who made God? How could he “just be there”? How could he be able to do everything? If he loves us so much, why would he send someone to hell forever? If you ask such questions to preachers, most will say, “It is beyond our comprehension.” Or, “You have to trust God, for he is right.” Which is a load of bull. Christianity promotes blind loyalty, just as Big Brother does. Whenever a question gets raised that contradicts God, most of them will say that. “We can’t possibly understand it.” Yeah, right. Which brings another thing. Whenever something bad happens, most people blame it on Satan, and Goldstein in 1984. Whenever something is good, they thank God for it, for instance someone that was sick got better, and then they say God did that. And they say Big Brother did that. (The good things) For example, the water is clear because of Big Brother. The chocolate is a lot more in production thanks to Big Brother. Nancy got better because of God. God spoke to Joe, (with him getting his life saved or something like that) which is why he is now following him, and going to church.
A quote from Jesus himself helps this claim. Mark 9:39 states, “Jesus answered, “Do no put the Lord your God to the test.” Blind faith comes into mind. Just like Big Brother.
Slavery is Freedom
In Christianity, there are 12 rules you must go by, and two things you must do, or you are sinful and go to Hell. In 1984 there are many things you have to go by, or else you get sent to the Ministry of Love. Basically, you are not allowed to do what you want to, and you have to follow God/Big Brother. Which you are not free; you are a slave to Big Brother/God.
Heaven = Luxury
If you follow God, than you will enter the Kingdom of Heaven and live for eternity, and be in a paradise. (I must tell you the truth, I despise the thought of that.) If you follow Big Brother, than you get luxuries. (The Inner Party comes into mind here.) If you do not follow God, you go to hell. If you do not follow Big Brother, you go to Room 101. If you follow God, you go to heaven. If you follow Big Brother, you get luxuries.
Religion = Life
It is striking how religion and Big Brother’s tyrant government both try to control all the aspects of the person’s life. In Christianity, you can’t commit murder, adultery, lie, envy, commit the seven deadly sins, you can’t have any other gods before God, you have to respect your mother and father, etc. etc. With Big Brother, they try to control the people’s lives, they can’t break the law, which there are many laws and things you can’t do. Thus, Christianity and The Party both try to control all the aspects of the person’s life.
Thanks,
Christopher
