We've got a thread on Video games. Personally I am addicted to cards. I LOVE cards. I also play Chess and Go, and that sort of thing. Anyone else into such passtimes? As a rule, I prefer the abstract sort of games. Among computer games, my favorite would likely be Tetris. Ultimately cards wins the day for me. I don't think there has been a more elegant, simple, and yet flexible human invention as the standard playing card deck. Anyways, Thoughts?

I love cards and dice! Dice just seem like such an esoteric device, and I've loved every game they are a part of, from dungeonds and dragons (ah my old dice collection to craps).
More on point, I've played poker professionaly (meaning all my income came from holdem, stud, and omaha) from 1995 till about 2001. I'm a pretty darn good player, but i can't play poker socially anymore as a result.
I do play gin and like games.

Well, I just recently learned how to play poker and it's pretty fun, but I'm not confident enough in my abilities yet. I do love Rummy, especially Liverpool Rummy. I've been playing chess since middle school.
I love table-top roleplaying games too, especially White Wolf's World of Darkness second edition games.

At the moment I usually play Crib and Rummy, though I have been invited to a poker group, so I plan to get involved in that. My big thing with cards is actually card tricks and flourishes. What can I say, I love magic, however you look at it!

speaking of magic, have you tried the ccg magic the gathering?
Well, like most people in this thread I just plain love cards and dice...I agree with fr.novumorganum and I always considered dice to be an invention of the esoteric kind, just like cards. I enjoy games employing them and I also enjoy strategy games a lot...
I play cards, Chess, also play backgammon as it is particularly popular around here. I play tabletop RPGs (not so much these days, but a lot more in the past) and also played a lot of Trading Card Games in the old days. Finally, I also like tabletop wargames so I play Confrontation and Warhammer 40K.
speaking of magic, have you tried the ccg magic the gathering?I have. As a matter of fact it is the only TCG I still engage in from time to time, although I have stopped buying new cards for many years. I just use my old decks which have cards mainly from the 6th and 7nth edition.

backgammon is a great gameYeah, it is. It is immensely popular here in Greece so I get to play tons of it, it's played virtually everywhere you look!
This (http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v249/Goyios/Antonis/?action=view¤t=PICT0001.jpg&refPage=&imgAnch=imgAnch1) is a picture taken at a typical Greek coffee house. The picture was aimed to photograph my (rather angry) friend but it's interesting to take the time and look at virtualy every other table and how they are all engrossed with playing backgammon...lol...
i miss table-top/minature war games..can't find a soul to play with:mad:Thankfully I have a circle of friends who either own, work or visit a particular Games Workshop store so it functions as a meeting place for us. Naturally, a battle will be always in the process whenever I come by and due to the fact that there are many of us, I get to organize and participate in battles relatively easily. Unfortunately I am lacking the time to do so these days though...soon, I hope :)
What wargames do you play fr.novumorganum?

About 20 years ago I developed a variant of the
venerable chessboard (iconoclast that I was)...
I called it 9board: the expanded chessfield for obvious reasons:
http://forums.abrahadabra.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=15&stc=1&d=1159387952
The pieces are set up as usual,
within the boundries of the 'center board'...
The Kings and Pawns must remain within the center board,
but all other pieces can travel anywhere among the nine...
All moves and other rules are identical to convention chess...
Being able to quickly maneuver and attack from
behind the lines makes this a bit like guerilla warfare...
_________________________________
While hovering over the board, focusing on the pieces, one is
quite likely to experience some weird peripheral visual effects...
To me, it appears that the board seems
to warp, as if draped over a sphere...:p

I also love cards and dice. I have a bunch of card trick books as well as books on poker and blackjack. I especially like blackjack. I live pretty close to a couple casinos, in fact I do some technical work in both of them, but I haven't made it out to actually gamble at either of them yet. Cribbage is a cool game which uses a peg board and, rather than dice, you play cards to determine how far you can move your peg. I go through waves of interest in that one. I also like Hearts and Euchre.
I tried playing D&D a couple type games and there was only one that I really enjoyed. Can't remember what it was called, but it was like a more structured, less "free" version, including spell cards and a board with a map board filled with squares that you travelled across with a dice roll. My friend and I created a bunch of extra spell cards for new spells we thought would be really neat to have in the game. We haven't played it in years though.
I played "Magic: The Gathering" way back when, but got sick of having to buy new cards to stand a chance against my competitors and frankly, I didn't like the other people that I knew who were into it. Not just because they were "geeks" but because they were just whiney, embarassingly immature and socially akward. Also, they were never willing to bet a random card on the outcome of a match (like you're supposed to, if you read the instructions) which I thought would add to the fun. Oh well.
My gf and I have been playing a lot of backgammon lately. What I like about it is that "fate" (the roll of the dice) plays a big role (pardon the pun) in the outcome but how you play the hand dealt to you by fate can often make the difference between winning or losing the match. We haven't gotten into using the doubling cube yet. We visited my family this weekend and taught my little brother how to play. He loves it.
We also recently picked up a Ouija board. It's my third one (so much for the urban legend of not being able to get rid of a board!) and her first. We tried it together once so far and it was fun. I believe the answers to come from the collection of the operators subconscious minds (which the board itself confirmed when asked), so it's a neat tool to uncover the hidden aspects of your minds, especially for a couple. A pendulum would be similar, but for a solo practitioner.

I used to enjoy Scrabble and other board and card games but moved away from my friends.
Thank god for the internet, now I occasionally come across others who want to play literati too : )
I suppose my favourite was Scrabble when I look back.

I am a HUGE Scrabble fan as well. I could play it for hours and hours.
There is another game I really like called "Mind Games", it basically gives scenerios of a complex nature with a resolution that really takes using your brain to figure out. I love that game as well.
