View Full Version : Magic squares and other figures...

This could easily go somewhere else, but owing to the fact that most people really working this stuff these days are in the mathematics camp, I figured that science would be the best place to put this.

I recently ordered a book called "The Zen of Magic Squares, Circles and Stars," by Clifford A. Pickover. I am quite honestly blown away by it so far, and I just finished the first chapter. This is rich rich rich, and written in full awareness of the historical mysticism associated with these figures. That being said, it's a math book, so it really just presents a gallery of squares, circles, stars, cubes, spheres, and even tesseracts which have 'magic square properties'. The thing is that anyone on this forum could run a million miles with this stuff.

So lets talk about magic squares. What do they do? Why do they work? What do they imply about the universe, and about truth, and what techniques can we use to work them? Also, let's actually play with some.

Here is Albrecht Durer's Square as it is found in his Print: Melancholia. (columns separated by a '.')

So. Anyone care to hack at this one?

Here's a little background info on this famous magic square: Dürer's Magic Square (http://mathworld.wolfram.com/DuerersMagicSquare.html)

I love this particular Math Site...tons of useful stuff...

Well, I presume from my working out that the Jupiter magick square

Lines being:

Planetary square 'x'

The square being 'x2'

The sum being all entries ÷ x arriving at 34 for all lines

I was working on the Mars, but to get the lines to all add up correctly needs a magickal/mathematical formula in itself :D

Thanks for the reference to The Zen of Magic Squares, sounds right up my alley.

I'm going to leave that Durer square for now or I may end up like that poor subject in the print :o_O:. Funny that you mentioned it, for it just came to my eyes for the first time weeks before your post. A warning ?

As well, I'm going to have to sleep on those questions about magic squares. Maybe that discussion warrants a new topic.

As far as it goes, the Durer square is actually the antidote to Melancholia. The idea being that the Jupiterian influence of the 4-fold square counterects the predominantly Saturnine character of the print itself.

Two 19s, a 40, and six 26s. A bit of a Tetragrammaton resonance.
