Hi there. Would anyone know of a copyright-free deck? I'm planning to give a course that involves Tarot and it would be nice to give people directions on how (or where) they can get a free deck.
I first planned to offer a PDF rendering of the Raider-Waite deck to the students, but then I learned that its copyrights are held by US Games.
Does anyone know of a "freeware" deck? Thanks a lot.

If you are about to teach a class, you might want to take a look at a series of books called The Encyclopedia of Tarot (http://www.amazon.com/dp/157281540X?tag=abrahadabraco-20&camp=0&creative=0&linkCode=as1&creativeASIN=157281540X&adid=119N11FKPZ8XJ5059CN7&) . Brilliant work and beautifully illustrated. I don't know of any freeware decks personally but there may be something out there. As a rule, a person's deck is a fairly personal choice and people should be willing to invest a little in something like that. If they are not, you may not be able to teach them anything anyway. If they aren't willing to spend $15/less on a decent deck...are they going to be willing to "think"? Thinking is much harder than spending a little money...
Personally...I would make it a requirement that they acquire a deck or don't bother showing up to the class...
I guess that makes me a mean person...

no that doesnt make you mean, :D what would be the purpose of someone learning (if that is the right word) the tarot if they are not willing to buy a deck of cards. How would they say that they are approaching the subject seriously? on Tv last night there was a Programme called the "bull......detective, and all he did was prove that things can be mis-used and lied about.and he defamed tarot as Bunkem on the basis that he only had cards for a day, and said the same thing to everyone -which they had believevd , whatever cards had come up he also set up a telephone tarot card reading service of Fakereaders:( . In my mind anyone who reads Tarot /learns it must prove their serious intent and honesty , else it decrys the whole tarot scene , making the sceptics more believeable. to me all the presenter in the programme said was thatTarot was bunkem because he personally lied , :o and showed that othewrs could lie thereby bringing posssible lack of integrity on those tarot readers (like myself who ARE and only want top be Genuine, Honest, seerious, truthful and an asset to the service.:)

Thats true, I have many decks, and there is even a Chinese copy of the Rider Waite now available for £5.99p. if people really cant afford a single deck then why are they investigating or wanting to learn ?( sorry if ithat sounds a bit dumb of me.

Yeah they should surely atleast show enough interest in the subject to buy a deck. If not I wouldnt waste my time trying to learn it to them either.
However their is any "free" decks out there to copy and print for use beats me, if their isnt then it is probably about time that someone made one.
The publicity of being the first free would be worth the work alone, then if one makes a good enough deck one might sell it in some high quality paper or perhaps thin plastic/rubber of some sort that doesnt wear as much as the standard deck's paper do.
Personally I believe that Tarot is something personal, just like dream interpretation. It is something one should Experience and Understand each one for themselves. I have never liked the idea that some fortune lady can read about me and interpret who and what I am by looking at some cards or whatever. I feel strongly that that is something that need to be performed subjectively to even get the slightest possible accuracy.
