Huey Lewis and the News......I think their undisputed masterpiece is "Hip to be Square", a song so catchy, most people probably don't listen to the lyrics. But they should, because it's not just about the pleasures of conformity, and the importance of trends, it's also a personal statement about the band itself.

Now.......first person who can name the movie without cheating gains my undying respect.

That one with Jon Cryer and Molly Ringwald?

In other news, I am listening to Eagles of Death Metal's "Peace Love Death Metal" album. Pretty soon though, I think I'll switch it out for some Elysian Fields.

Wasn't Huey Lewis in some bad movie recently with Gwyneth Paltrow?? I'll be curious to see which movie you're referring to here zaii...

I'm listening to Winter Solsitce IV, I love the whole series, on Windham Hill...Saturdays I listen to several CBC Radio Two shows - Peter Togni in the morning, I Hear Music and Sound Advice(which classical releases are worthwhile, and why) later on and of course, Saturday Afternoon at the Opera. It's sort of a tradition around here even if I don't love the particular opera, I always like the quiz/commentary.

Yeah...good lyrics. Chrome comes on the dancefloor and you have to hit it, but the song is a good ten minutes long at a pace only a few people have the drive to tackle. I always had a sideache afterwards.

Not listening to anything at the moment but I recently pirated Tupac's All Eyez On Me Snoop Doggy Dogg's Doggfather, Dr. Dre's Chronic (my copies are too old and too scratched up to burn). They don't make rap like that anymore. I also bought the latest Asleep by Dawn by DJ Ferret compilation, I liked the new Absurd Minds, Paralysed Age, Joachim Witt, Dopestars Inc, Emilie Autumn, The Cruxshadows, Stromkern and Angelspit songs (though I had already listened to Angelspit a zillion times, so I sort of just skip that track)

My most recent track I listened to in the car about two hours ago was Wagner's Die Ring De Nebulungen + vocals performed by the Berlin Orchestra, while I explained to Greg why Wotan was screwed and why Brunnhilde was so upset...

Music to invade Poland to.

It's Saturday, so I listen to CBC Radio Two all day - have been for over a decade. Peter Togni's eclectic show in the morning, various shows all morning (including my favourite Sound Advice, recommendations on classical CDs/new releases) and the opera in the afternoon. I love this little weekend ritual - make dog cookies, do the houseplants, drink some vino and listen to the CBC.

I know, I know, I'm so domestic...

Divide - Assemblage 23

I lost myself in shapeless oceans
Whose depths concealed more than they showed
Beliefs obscured by mists around them
A legacy they'd been bestowed

Columns of ice paint awkward pictures
Distorted forms that once seemed real
Engulfed inside transparent textures
Billowing curtains as hard as steel

For all the noise filling the landscape
Whispers & cries with no reply
It's quiet here within these boundaries
And thoughts collect like pools of light

My eyes divide the sky
As sirens sound in heaven
My will brings down the moon
And shatters it to pieces

The silence grew inconsequential
The day became a paradigm
A thousand years, a hundred decades
An arbitrary slice of time

I found myself with no companion
Except the salty earth and sky
And suddenly there came my focus
The world around me clarified

And so I walked in isolation
Hoping solace would cross my path
Ignored the road that lay behind me
And stepped away from the aftermath

I lost myself in shapeless oceans
Whose waters turned from dark to clear
I floated there, a tiny island
With no more doubt, with no more fear

The Grudge, by Tool

Wear your grudge like a crown of negativity.
Calculate what we will or will not tolerate.
Desperate to control all and everything.
Unable to forgive your scarlet lettermen.

Clutch it like a cornerstone. otherwise it all comes down.
Justify denials and grip it to the lonesome end.
Clutch it like a cornerstone. otherwise it all comes down.
Terrified of being wrong. ultimatum prison cell.

Saturn ascends, choose one or ten. hang on or be humbled again.

Clutch it like a cornerstone. otherwise it all comes down.
Justify denials and grip it to the lonesome end.
Saturn ascends, comes round again.
Saturn ascends, the one, the ten. ignorant to the damage done.

Wear your grudge like a crown of negativity.
Calculate what you will or will not tolerate.
Desperate to control all and everything.
Unable to forgive your scarlet lettermen.

Wear the grudge like a crown. desperate to control.
Unable to forgive. and were sinking deeper.

Defining, confining, sinking deeper. controlling, defining, and were sinking
Deeper.

Saturn comes back around to show you everything
Lets you choose what you will not see and then
Drags you down like a stone or lifts you up again
Spits you out like a child, light and innocent.

Saturn comes back around. lifts you up like a child or
Drags you down like a stone to
Consume you till you choose to let this go.
Choose to let this go.

Give away the stone. let the oceans take and transmutate this cold and fated
Anchor.
Give away the stone. let the waters kiss and transmutate these leaden grudges
Into gold.

Let go.

I've decided to see if I can get by listening to only free/independent digital download music, as a way to protest the RIAA. The Dark Side of Phobos: Free Music!

Ok lots of you people are from the tail end of Generation X, like myself. The tail of the comet of angst and gothic ness is known as the sub generation Doom (alternatively as MTV for those without video games)

So I know all of you will love this album.

Of particular note is the female vocals of Elsa Persson on the track "Darkness Dawning" who I CANNOT believe is not famous yet.

The Dark Side of Phobos is a massive album featuring some of the best indie talent in the emerging game music genre, including names like Beatdrop, DJ Carbunk1e and analoq. Industrial and metalheads alike will find much to love in this album, and for video game music lovers it's an absolute must.

Best of all, it's free, legally! Fuck the RIAA! (http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=riaa)

This album actually had me playing the original PC Doom game as well as attempting to finish Doom 3 which has been gathering dust on my desktop for close to 2 1/2 years now because it's so scary (I don't use godmode)

Download it via torrent (You'll need a torrent client prog like utorrent (http://www.utorrent.com/).) at the link below:

I still have all of Juno Reactor's songs on my WMP but I never listen to them. I got all matrixed out. Saw a cool concert video of them on the Metropolis DvD video/cd combo I got on clearance at Hot Topic. I really didn't know they actually got up on the stage in authentic African outfits and bongo drums....

But seriously...I prefer the Matrix versions to the original Labryrinth compositions. Like Mona Lisa Overdrive has a harder punch than the original version.

Here's another copyright free song of the day, click link below, then left click on a mirror and "save as" mp3 format.

Modern Jazz mainly. I've been listening to Tubby Hayes's 'Mexican Green' album - to say he was a British 50's big band legend and a hard be-bopper to boot, it's pretty amazing that he had the balls to attempt something as avant garde as this album is in places.

Best track is the first, 'Dear Johnny B', which is a dedication to a drummer called Johnny Butts - a friend of my father as it happens, who was killed in a freak motorcycle accident in Greece, just as his playing career was about to really take off.

Homeward:

The hallowed lands so far behind
As fleeting dreams still linger
Like distant voices through the rain
Like grains of sand cast from my hands

I never thought I'd go this far
Without a star to cross the seas
So far from shores I'd left behind
Still far from shores I've yet to reach

I try to find the strength I need
To calm the doubts in my belief
With the will, I know my heart won't break

One of the most utterly sexual songs I happen to listen to on a regular basis.

---

Skin on Skin by Queens of the Stone Age

From the moment you said "why haven't you kissed me yet?"
I knew I'd wipe that paint from your lips.
I stare the lids off your eyes,
Gone down on your dirty mind,
And end up between your hips.
Handfuls of sweat tangled hair, anytime, anywhere.
I wanna lick you too much baby.
I just play all alone, whispering for your moan.
Forced to crawl down this line, just to touch.

I can get in, I can't get out.
I'm just sweating my sheets.
I hate to see you leave,
But I love to watch you go baby.
Twisted secret lives,
The way you bat your eyes.
Givin head, givin head, givin head.

Watch you come from above.
I'm so needy for love,
I'm desperate.
Greedy in slavery,
I sneak around from behind.
I got a one track mind.
We got a skin on skin thing baby.
I wanna lick you too much.
I hear you comin oooh aaah baby.

Edit* Amy Millan.. I swear I've heard that name somewhere before. I wonder if I can get it over here.I was scanning over this entire thread and just now saw this little response to an earlier post from me. Sorry I missed it way back then. Amy Millan is a singer for a band called Stars and also does some things with Broken Social Scene. That much I know. I don't really dig the Stars' cheezy sounding stuff but her solo thing is completely different, almost opposite of what Stars is.

And fr.novumorganum, I noticed that you listen to a lot of the same types of things I do. I just found out recently that a huge portion of the music I listen to is called "indie rock". I had heard that label before but never knew I was listening to it. Back in the 80's it was called "alternative" (to my memory) and was primarily played on college radio. Now it doesn't seem to be played anywhere, at least not where I live, and what is now called "alternative" doesn't seem to be much of an alternative. Whatever...

Right now I am listening to ELO's "Mr. Blue Sky".

I would agree on the mention of Amy Millan's solo album vs. her Stars records although personally, I enjoy quite a bit of both. Broken Social Scene, I've had a harder time getting myself to enjoy.

I was actually listening to Broken Social Scene before I got on the computer earlier. I really dig 'em for kind of the same reason I dig a band like Radiohead. You can't really put a box around what they do. Their musical styles are all over the place probably because they have something like 15-25 members, give or take, all throwing their flavors in. Very consistently inconsistent.

I'll give them that for sure. Usually, I like that in a band: I love Queens of the Stone Age because even though I can always recognize them, their albums all sound different to me; I love Jennifer Charles and Oren Bloedow because even though their stuff as Elysian Fields has only mild variance, they'll also go and do something like La Mar Enfortuna; I love PJ Harvey because despite her MOOD and ATTITUDE being fairly consistent, she has a strong ability to be versatile in how she chooses to express it; etc.

greatful dead-franklins tower

In another times forgotten space
Your eyes looked from your mothers face
Wallflower seed on the sand and stone
May the four winds blow you safely home.

Roll away the dew
Roll away the dew
Roll away the dew
Roll away the dew

Ill tell you where the four winds dwell
In franklins tower there hangs a bell
It can ring, turn night to day
It can ring like fire when you loose your way.

Roll away the dew
Roll away the dew
Roll away the dew
Roll away the dew

God save the child that rings that bell
It may have one good ring, baby, you cant tell
One watch by night, one watch by day
If you get confused listen to the music play.

(instrumental)

Some come to laugh their past away
Some come to make it just one more day
Whichever way your pleasure tends
If you plant ice youre gonna harvest the wind.

Roll away the dew
Roll away the dew
Roll away the dew
Roll away the dew

In franklins tower the four winds sleep
Like four lean hounds the lighthouse keep
Wildflower seed on the sand and wind
May the four winds blow you home again.

Roll away the dew
Roll away the dew
Roll away the dew
Youd better roll away the dew

Roll away the dew
Roll away the dew
Roll away the dew
Youd better roll away the dew - roll away.

Welcome To The Theatron Animatronique (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VgD9PUxOkG4)
Arbor solis et arbor lunae curse of god rains down forming two great seas
Now the king and queen bathe in mercury because it kills everything

Contra naturum, mors philosophorum let the blood clot 'round sanguinary stone
Who dares block the path on the journey home? pharoah let my people go!

Build the temple high
So the world can see
Build the adytum
And the sanctuary
Then adorned with gold
At the temple feast
Rejoice in work complete

Burn the temple down
Set the captives free
Raze the adytum
And the sanctuary
Strip them of their robes
Spit upon their feast
And hand the temple priests

And the angels fall
And the demons rise
Sons of hermes born
Of the eagle eye
Show the holograms
To their sightless eyes
So that they might become wise

Who can look past
The hypocrites
Who desecrate the truth?
The chosen and saved
Pretending with their slaves
To rejoice in work complete

Who can see past
The "philosophers"
Who have denied the truth?
More cowardly than slaves
All lusting for their graves
They know not what they do

Who can see past the lies?
The lies! lies! lies!

Slightly modified Coldplay - clocks lyrics:

Lights go out and I can't be saved.
Tides that I tried to swim against
Have brought me down upon my knees
Oh I beg and beg and plead singing,
Come out of things unsaid,
shoot an apple off my head and a,
Trouble that can't be named,
a Tigers waiting to be tamed, singing.

.You.
.Are.
.You.
.Are.

Confusion never stops,
closing walls and ticking clocks
Gonna come back and take you home.
I could not stop that you now know, singing,

Come out upon my seas.
Cursed missed oppurtunities
Am I part of the cure
or am I part of the disease, singing.

.You.
.Are.
.You.
.Are.
.You.
.Are.

.You.
.Are.
.You.
.Are.

.And nothing else compares.
Oh nothing else compares.
And nothing else compares.

Lemuria

[Lyrics by Thomas Karlsson]
[Music by Christofer Johnsson]

In the ocean, deep down
Under raging waves, wrapped in memories, you'll find
Wrecks of stately ships, they all went astray

Captain, did you find
Land of Mu, Eldorado for the seaman?
Or did you sink in dreams (and) lose your ship
In the Sirens' symphony?

When the sailman's sailing away
He shows that the dream of Lemuria is true
A land lost he will find again
Hear the call from the depth of the anemone song
Do you dare to enter the ship?
Hear the call from below of an underwater world
Land of Mu is close to the stars
In the arms of the sea you will live as hypnotized

Call of Narayana, the seven-headed on
Lemuria, rise!

Typhon

[Lyrics by Thomas Karlsson]
[Music by Kristian Niemann]

Typhon is alive - Descending with allies
From the mountain of the snake In the deepest night of Pan
Typhon will return With Erebos and Nyx
And a vision of the storm And the Ocean and Tethys

[Chorus:]
The Dragon breaks the temple wall
The Flood will drown our gods
Break down the wall
And let another kingdom rise
The castle of Olympia
Is shaking by the storm
The King lost his crown
And now the wall is tumbling down

Typhon overthrow the throne of Father Zeus
The creation of the gods And the order of Mankind
Typhon is alive- Descending with allies
And the empires will fear All the power of ther wrath
