names that people choose for themselves have a certain impact on them over time and can, in many cases, act very much like "magickal names" denoting where you are at in the moment and also where you wish to go internally. Because of this...because they sort of amount to signposts of a kind, people will occasionally find that they have simply outgrown an older name and feel a strong need to swap it out for a new one.
A lot of sites don't allow for this since there is a general fear that encouraging this will create a maintenance load on administrators that is just too hard to keep up with, and, in fact, this can be the case without a certain ground-rules laid in. So here's the deal...
I will allow name changes on these forums under the following conditions:
(1) I need people to commit to their new names for at least 1 full year...if you don't have that much confidence in the name then it's not the right name.
(2) I need people to take responsibility for letting others know what has happened. This can be easily accomplished by placing a little aka (also known as) notation in your signature and it shouldn't usually be necessary to leave this in place for more than a month...so let's say 30 days after which time you can remove it.
note: be aware that name-changes do become retroactive in vBulletin...there's nothing that can be done about this. All of your older posts will suddenly show up under your new name. vBulletin does not define an account on the basis of the user's name so much as on their IP address and assigned user number.
And that's all really...I don't want to encourage a rash of name changes but I also know that it sometimes becomes important to do this and I want to honor that when it is, in fact, important...
