OK, I pride myself on having enough imagination to guess as to the ignore list's function, but what in practical terms are the Buddy List's uses?

good question...I've never used the stupid thing. I think it might alert you when your "buddy" posts something (like a subscriptions function) but I am not altogether sure...maybe you should pick a random "buddy" and see what happens...if your PM box gets flooded with auto-generated "hi-buddy!!!" junkola or something we'll know it's really and truly useless...

I've been watching a chosen guinea pig "buddy" for at least an hour now. Apart from adding the symbol + at the end of the chosen buddy's name, it doesn't seem to do anything at all

Yea they normally dont have to much to add to the system when you have those options...sometimes they make it easier to pm them on some servers...depends on who host the site...i agree not much widow dressing to it....

Ah, found one use for it:
You may limit the receipt of private messages to just moderators and those on your buddy list (http://forums.abrahadabra.com/profile.php?do=editlist). Other members who attempt to send messages to you will be told that you have disabled private messaging.

Go to quicklinks at the top, "open buddy list" and it will give you a list of which of your buddies are online. and off
you can also checkmark the list and pm them simultaneously.
