View Full Version : Sleep. How do you get a good nights sleep?

Its nearly 1:30 in the morning and I would normally be asleep, or at least, if I was awake, I might have at least got a couple of hours in by now.
I cannot sleep tonight.
What are your suggestions for getting a good nights sleep. How do you get off to sleep and stay asleep for as long as you need to?
How many hours do you normally need to be a nice, friendly human being the next day?
What do occultists count if they can't sleep, goats? Are there any occult rituals that might help? Herbs? Chants?

Chamomile tea or Celestial Seasonings Sleepytime tea, no caffeine after 3 pm and turning off the computer.
Sex or dildos.
Cosmicbrat has an alpha particle technique that works good, I've never used it on myself though.
Maybe just wandering off in some astral landscape...
I need 8 hours of sleep.

well, at the risk of sounding redundant...the TwinStar can be a useful thing to count going to sleep and it can also lead to astral dreams...
wine's not a bad option either...

Well, I usually stop the caffeine after 6pm and the computer is in my room and it hums so that has to go off. This bits all cool :D

I knew there was something missing from my life...

Sounds intriguing

I use that a lot, but last night it did not work.

Yes, I have used the TwinStar before but not sure I was even relaxed enough last night to get my head round it.
wine's not a bad option either...
Should you really encourage that after my recent drinking episodes? lol
I think I am just going to have to take that bedside picture of you down m1thr0s, its the eyes you know

All good suggestions so far...and usually I have the opposited problem, i fall asleep at 9 pm and am up at 4. But last fall i started having episodes of waking up unable to fall back asleep. I constructed an astral "sleep temple" with soprcific correpsondence sthat help me feel comfortable and invoked what i think of as a nocturnal angel, who assists people that require rest but are troubled. It's been enormously helpful and I'm back to normal sleeping now despite the presence of a puppy who likes to kick me in strange places throughout the night when his legs get stiff.
Other things that work for me are a good book and some warm milk (lots of tryptophan), just the usual comfort stuff. BUt if it's serious insomnia you might see a doctor, it can be something medical as many women of the age group you and I are in experience insomnia...something else to look forward to.
Don't you have a cat, Ricci>? I find my dogs snuggling up are natural soporifics and I understand cat people feel the same way about felines...
hope this passes soon. I find alcohol puts me out sharply but I never get really good quality sleep when i've had a few - I wake up overheated and dehydrated, you know...
Good luck!

I would be interested in knowing more about this temple.

That works normally, but last night I just wasn't up to making it at 2am.

Not mine, it dumps me as soon as its owner arrive home from work lol

I often awake in the middle of the night and am not bothered by it but I had something on my mind last night and couldn't switch off.
I think there are also too many interesting things going on in my life right now and I simply hate the idea of wasting time asleep when I could be getting on with interesting projects.

or dildos.
Hehe. Though apparently true. A close female friend would swear by it and uses it every night after brushing her teeth
The computer has a lot to answer for. I just got mine in October, and since then I've been regularly staying up for 30+ hours at a time. Before I might have had difficulties due to caffeine, but there was no way I could stay awake that long, so you (and I) should treat the computer as a stimulant that's worse than caffeine. I heard this subject once on an ironically late night radio slot, and the expert concurred that mental stimulants, even reading, is a bad choice.

Ah, now I find reading puts me to sleep, but holding a heavy book in bed is uncomfortable.
What I use personally is the visualized tracing of yantras (mandalas or symbolic diagrams) in combination with slowing down my breathing. It's a real tension remover and serves as a very intense portal too for astral dreams.

Well you know, astral temples are kind of personal. :) I have several, for various reasons; I have "The Citadel of Endurance" for times when I need to be with my pain, honour and transmogrify, not sublimate it; I have the Binatic sphere (dont ask me, ask Nuhad  ) and another, Netzachian place of healing, but I have found we humans are not always ready for healing so I dont go there when i can feel my internal resistance is strong. Going to the Healing Sphere is a sort of gift I give myself but only when I know I am ready.
The Sleep temple for me draws on many images I have of comfort, safety, gentleness. You need to layer your own images over the Qabalistic correspondences you possess and merge them. I think thats about all I can say that will be useful.
Good luck - I love the nighttime and wish I could stay up reading and so on but those days are over. I've always found that techniques work best when they operate on all the levels so I will have the milk, read the big heavy book, cuddle the puppy, and invoke the Sleep Temple. I rarely find it fails and if it does>? It just might be physiological...:o_O: .

the computer being a sleep problem? hmmm. well i have two in my room among other novelties but that's not it. IT's the people next door, under me, above me and outside.
i am also interested in the sleep temple, astral angel.

Hmmm.
I don't have any trouble getting to sleep. I need 8 hours. Sometimes I do some mind magick if there is a need, but I'm usually asleep pretty fast. I have more trouble staying awake ;)

or dildos.
I was thinking babout this later on, with my previous response in mind, and it struck me: Hang on, I meant a vibrator. Aren't dildos what heterosexual men use?

no dildos are the things made of jelly like substances that do not vibrate. both guys and girls can use both.
a heterosexual man who is really lame is often referred to as a dildo...

Now this is more the kind of thing I was looking for Kain. Do you have any examples of the mandalas?

Yes, I got off to sleep with hot milk nice and early last night, only to be woken by the neighbours. Again.

I have always wondered what they were but didn't like to ask. Don't tell anyone that though will you. :o
Now this is more the kind of thing I was looking for Kain. Do you have any examples of the mandalas?Well, any kind of sufficiently integrational or all-encompassing symbol could be used for this purpose. Unicursal or continuous symbols are also a plus. The TwinStar is a good idea that m1thr0s brought up earlier. I personally also like to work a lot with the layout of the chakras around the body. There are other possibilities however. For instance:
